NSW State Wide Pairs

July 30 - August 5, 2018

In 2018 the NSW State Wide Pairs will run for one session only during the first week in August.

Hands are provided together with a booklet, which features brief commentary on each deal for perusal at the completion of the session. The event is then scored across all participating clubs and overall winners determined.

Cash prizes are presented, as well as gift vouchers from the Bridge Shop and certificates for the winners in each club. Prizes are also awarded in the restricted divisions of Under 25, Under 50 and Under 100 masterpoints (as at 30th June 2018).

In an unprecedented occurrence, pairs from a single venue (Dubbo Bridge Club) took out the top three places. This clearly required close scrutiny, as this type of skewed result can occur if all weak pairs in a club are sitting in the same direction and all the strong pairs are sitting in the other. Dubbo have assured me that their NS and EW fields are always allocated randomly and that the SWP session was no exception. I have also done my own independent check by comparing the masterpoints holdings of all their players. Although the NS field was stronger, the difference was not so disparate that I think any deliberate manipulation of the fields has taken place, e.g. both the EW and NS fields included 3 pairs eligible for the Under 25 MP prize. I am therefore completely satisfied that the results from Dubbo are sound, as I expected from a club that has been a loyal supporter of the State-Wide Pairs for many decades.

There were 461 pairs competing in 25 different clubs, an increase of 19 pairs and 1 club from 2017. Final positions of all pairs can be found by following the Overall Results link below. Results for each club can be found by following the Club Results link below. Pairs can obtain a full breakdown of their results by accessing the scoring website nationwidepairs.com.au/nswbapairs.html, following the links to Overall Results and then clicking on their pair names. Note that when the event is matchpointed across the state, percentages and order of rank can vary quite considerably from those obtained when matchpointing involves only those players within the club. The smaller the club session, the greater this effect. These raw results include casual pairs and hence final positions may not be correct. Note that the red masterpoint awards shown are all incorrect.

This year’s runaway winners were Sanjay Sinha and Neville Nott with a huge score of 79% over 12% clear of their nearest challengers. They only had one below average score. Congratulations on a remarkable effort.

The battle for the minor placings was a much tighter affair. Second were Lyn Armstrong and Denise Gough who scored 68.52 %, just 0.17% ahead of Fitz McKay and Peter Tarlinton who came third.

Hazel Adamson and Gail Farrell (Moruya) finished fourth with Allwynne Taylor and Andrew Laurich (Bayview) fifth.

Winners of the restricted masterpoint categories are:

Below 25 MPs: Penny and Philip Powell from Dubbo

Below 50 MPs: David Driscoll and Clifford Hall from Orange

Below 100 MPs: Bernie Deverson and Helen Ayliffe from Bayview
