Spring Forward
Congresses for Players at Every Level
In July, NSWBA launched the NSW Online Pairs League, a state-wide IMPs Pairs competition particularly aimed at non-metropolitan players, which was played on the RealBridge platform every Thursday night for 8 weeks. The Winter season results are on the NSWBA website – the event was a real hit with those who participated! The Spring season commences on 6 October. This flyer has detailed information.

Here are some reasons you should really want to play:
  • short (12 board) sessions (start at 7:30 pm, no more than 1.5 hours)
  • separate divisions for players at every level
  • a full round-robin with North-South and East-West winners in each division (a truly fair IMPs pairs event)
  • lots of social interaction
  • half-price entry (only $20/player for 8 weeks – what a bargain) for less experienced players (<100 masterpoints) whom NSWBA is keen to encourage
  • Red masterpoints
  • substitutes allowed for matches where life gets in the way
  • NSWBA returns $10 to the NSW registered Home Club of each participant!

For the Rookies
There are quite a few excellent events coming up for less experienced bridge players. Firstly, following on from very successful Pairs and Teams events at the Central Coast, the State Novice and Restricted Teams Championships will be held on 12-13 November in Wollongong.

Happy Rookies in the recent Central Coast Novice & Restricted Pairs - NOVICE 1st Kevin & Maureen Carson, 2nd Christine MacNicol and Deirdre Land. RESTRICTED 1st Robyn Rogers and Maeve Doyle, 2nd Sam Zilber and Sam York.
Winning Teams in the recent Central Coast Novice & Restricted Teams - NOVICE 1st David Purkiss, Peter Cloughessy, Jan Lawson and Mark Mathews. RESTRICTED 1st Colin Speller, Jodie Gudaitis, Nerida Gillies and Sandy Carter; 2nd Robbie Feyder, Michael Hogan, Richard Carter and Jay Novak. The Best Under 50MPs Team - Kyna Foo, Steph Price, Marlene Velecky and Chris Hamam.

Also note that there are events especially designed for players in the novice, restricted and intermediate categories as part of the Sydney Spring Nationals. This is the NSW-hosted national event, to be held in October at Canterbury Racecourse. Please check the program on MyABF and get your entries in!
And after that comes the Under 100 Masterpoints Championship. This has 4 divisions for players with 0-10, 10-25, 25-50 and 50-100 masterpoints. Clubs have been invited to run qualifying events in September / October, then there will be a Local Final sometime in the week 21-27 November. All Local Finals will play the same boards and the results will be matchpointed across the state.
For the Competitors
GNOT
The Metropolitan Final for the Grand National Open Teams was held F2F at the NSWBA on 17-18 September. The field comprised 22 teams from 12 metropolitan clubs and led to the selection of 4 more teams who will play in the National Final, see the photos above.

Meanwhile the Country Regional Finals are in progress. At the time of writing, 5 of 10 regions had completed their events, which will qualify a total of 15 teams to the National Final.

John Arkinstall State Teams

Metropolitan region
Clubs from the Sydney region that have not yet run their qualifying events still have enough time to do so and thus be able to send a representative team to the Metropolitan Final on 16th October. Also note that players who miss out via a club qualifying event can enter directly to play in the Jacaranda Teams being held in parallel.

Clubs from regional NSW have been running club and zonal qualifying events - the Northern Zone has chosen teams to advance to the State Final, while other Zonal Finals are still in progress.
Note that the next NSWBA Monday Night event is the NSW Mixed Teams Championships over 3 Mondays (10-31 October).  This will be held online on RealBridge. Please find the details and enter via MyABF

For players
To better understand situations that arise when a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained several of them in detail, together with the reasons behind the rulings. His articles are written from the perspective of players - you may find them helpful in your quest to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has established a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
