Spring into the New Normal
With the full vaccination rate continuing to hit its targets and the relaxation of some restrictions, it feels like there is hope that some face-to-face congresses may resume before the end of the year. Scheduled online events will continue to "bridge" the transition until we are settled into the new normal.

As this issue is published, the Sydney Spring Nationals has commenced. For the first time ever, it is being run online, on RealBridge. Kibitzing is not available, please follow the daily bulletin on MyABF for news and stories.
The NSWBA has made its popular Teams of Three event available online! This will be held on Wednesday 27th October 2021 on RealBridge. You form a team of 3 players and we assign an experienced player as your Captain. The captain will play at least two rounds with each team member through the day. Don't miss this fantastic learning experience! Limited seating dependent on availability of Captains, so please enter early on the NSWBA website.
2021 State Online Novice & Restricted Teams winners: 1st Restricted Teams (Clockwise from top) - Patrick Jiang, Shijun Tian, Hui Li and Sherlock Shao. 1st Novice Teams: Adam & Edette Sevil and Lou Russell & Tammy Hubbard.
In 2021 the NSWBA will send 22 teams to the Grand National Open Teams Final (GNOT) - 7 of these will come from the Sydney Metropolitan region, the remainder from elsewhere in NSW. The Metropolitan selection events, including direct qualifying events and the GNOT Metropolitan Final, have been completed - team photos are below. Country Regional Finals are still in progress and we will introduce the Country Regional Teams in the next issue.
Last month, a brand new Monday night event was run in memory of Tim Seres, long recognised as one of Australia's best-ever players. This matchpoint pair tournament was held on RealBridge, on 27th September and 11th October. The results are here. Congratulations to:
  • 1st Malcolm Carter & Lyn Carter
  • 2nd Julian Foster & David Weston
  • 3rd Sandra Richman & Andrew Richman
The NSWBA Monday Night Championships will continue to run online on RealBridge. The Online State Swiss Pairs will be held over 3 Monday nights on 18th, 25th October and 1st November. Please find the details and enter via MyABF.

Directors Course
For club administrators
If you represent a club and would like to host a Directors Course, please contact NSWBA for further details.

For players
To better understand situations that arise when a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained several of them in detail, together with the reasons behind the rulings. His articles are written from the perspective of players – you may find them helpful in your quest to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has established a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
